- Convert FREE Google Books .epub files to .mobi for Kindle using free calibre software
- Link to free calibre reader/conversion software (it's great)
- Formats Kindle can read: Kindle (.AZW, .AZW1). Text (.TXT), Unprotected Mobipocket (.MOBI, .PRC), .PDF. Audible: (.AA, .AAX). Music: MP3 (.MP3)
- Formats that Amazon will convert via e-mail are: Word .DOC/.DOCX, HTML/HTM, JPEG/JPG, RTF, TXT , GIF, PNG, BMP, PDF (experimental, type "CONVERT" in subject line).
- CALIBRE: What are the best source formats to convert? In order of decreasing preference: LIT, MOBI, EPUB, FB2, HTML, PRC, RTF, PDB, TXT, PDF. Save .doc/.docx files from Open Office as .odt file for conversion
- How to tell if the Kindle is still indexing certain books: You can tell if a book has not yet been indexed. Go to home, and type a
nonsense word, like "qwxx", then search for it. In the search results,
you'll be able to tell if any titles have not yet been indexed.
- How to take a screen capture with the Kindle Touch: Hold down the Home button, tap the screen, continue holding Home for an additional second or two. The screenshot files are saved to the root of USB storage as seen when tethered to a computer.
- Info on "My Clippings" file. It contains highlights and notes taken while reading: http://kindleworld.blogspot.com/2010/01/q-on-kindles-my-clippings-file.html.
- Edit .mobi files: There is a Calibre plugin called Mobi Unpack that will extract the mobi and then you can edit the .html file to your liking using Microsoft Word or another editor. The files will then need to be recompiled to create a new .mobi file (.mobi is NOT a .zip file like a .epub)... simply drag and drop the edited .html file back into Calibre and then convert it back to .mobi.
- Alternative, easy way to edit .mobi files:
- Use Calibre to convert the file to .RTF
- Edit the file in Microsoft Word just like any normal Word document. Find and replace are perfect and quick for fixing repeated errors (even changing straight to smart quotes, which is more pleasant to read)
- Save to .RTF again in Word, then convert back to .MOBI with Calibre. Voila!
- Edit .epub files: ePub files are actually renamed zip files. Find an .epub file you want to edit and then change the file extension to .zip. Now you can browse the files of the ePub file. Notice that it contains mostly HTML or XHTML files and images. Click Extract all files to save them all in a folder so you can easily edit them.Once you’ve made all the changes you wanted, it’s time to turn this folder of files back into ePub. Make sure you change the name of the folder if it still has the same name as the original ePub or zip file so you don’t mix them up or have trouble with overwriting the old files. Zip the folder using Windows Explorer or your favorite archival utility. Now change the file extension again, this time back to .epub. Use calibre to convert to a Kindle format like .mobi. - How to reset Kindle Reading Progress timer: You can reset the timer by tapping the search icon when in a book, then searching for: ;ReadingTimeReset Note that it's case sensitive, with that semicolon in front. Then when you go back to your book you'll see that the time to read is being recalculated.
- Kindle Paperwhite take a screen shot: To take screenshots tap the upper right and lower left corner simultaneously, or the upper left corner and lower right. They get saved on the root of the Kindle drive and you have to plug it into a computer to access them.
OSNOVA's Direct Verse Jump for Kindle Touch
From http://osnova.com/blog/2012/03/05/dvj-on-touch/
To jump directly to any verse in the Bible on Kindle Touch:
- With the Bible open, tap at the top of the screen.
- Type in the search window the abbreviation for the desired Bible book as indicated in the Table of Contents, followed by a space. Then type the chapter number, followed by a space, and the verse number. For example, jn 3 16.
- Change the search from “This Book” to “Index Items.” Press Go and tap on the search result.
- To open the table of contents, tap at the top of the screen (with the desired book open), select “Table of Contents” and tap on it.
Another useful function of the Kindle Touch is “the flip”:
- With the book open, swipe your finger right to left to “flip” to the next page, or left to right to go back one page. Same thing can be done by simply tapping the screen once on the right (to go to the next page) or on the left (to return to a previous page).
- In OSNOVA e-books, we have also added a “vertical flip” that moves you from chapter to chapter. Swipe your finger up or down to go to the next (up) or previous (down) chapter. If you see the title of a Bible book at the top of the page, this navigation method will move to the next (up) or previous (down) book.
- A hint: an underlined number, word, phrase, or even a dot, is, in most cases, a hyperlink that you can click to move to the linked text. To return to the initial position after following a hyperlink, tap the top of the screen and tap the BACK key.
